John was born in 1957 in Belfast, Northern Ireland and at the age of one day he was placed in the care of the Sisters Of Nazareth.

I first became aware of John's story in May 2009. With his authority I have spent the past year creating a set of photographs to try and add a visual narrative to the first seventeen years of his life, whilst in the care of the church. It is his story, in his words. I simply photographed the objects that form significant triggers to the hidden details that form the story of his journey to freedom.
