À propos du livre
Breakdown exposes human vulnerability with a story of an ordinary middle class family on a perfectly ordinary weekend shopping trip that turns into a struggle.
What starts as an isolated accident reveals other personal and societal failures that expose inherent fragility within our society. Straddling conceptual and documentary dimensions this project invites the viewer to consider how vulnerability manifests in our lives and in the society as a whole.
Breakdown takes place in a car parking area of a shopping estate. Regarded by Marc Auge as a nonplace, a retail park is a transient space that grants its visitors anonymity.
Inspired by Duane Michals, Breakdown offers questions, not answers. How does it feel to be a prisoner in this uniformly grey, highly monitored space? What does this space do to its anonymous visitors? Along with the anonymity, does it grant us all an unspoken license to behave in uncaring and disconnected ways?
The project emerged out of a personal experience of a breakdown in a similar setting. Sometimes it helps to acknowledge that we are vulnerable. If we are aware and accepting of own vulnerabilities we are more open to recognising and understanding other people's struggles.
