Food has never played a very big part in my life until I met the Gaertner family. I discovered very quickly that I would have to learn to make a few family favourties if I wanted to be the one in the kitchen. I married a German-Italian French speaking man who could whip up a meal in no time and enjoyed spending time in the kitchen. Quickly I learned that this was something that the entire family could do with the exception of Dad - but I think that is because he had to compete with Mom (which is no small feat) and five children in the kitchen.
So this book started because my very talented sister in law had put together a family diary in 1995 that contained a few of the "hot favourite" recipes. This diary has long ago lost its shape and is falling to pieces due to heavy utilization. So thanks Maya for your inspiration to start this book.
