Julia C R Gray, b.1960 in Los Angeles, California, now lives and works in Cardiff by the Sea, CA. After decades of working as a painter, Gray returned to University to complete a BFA in 2014, at San Francisco Art Institute. Studying sculpture increased her artistic knowledge and craft. While taking a year to build a new ceramic studio Gray developed a daily practice photographing seaweed compositions. Gray combines her photography with expertise in painting and ceramic sculpture to create works that include renderings on 3-D forms. This layered work of form, texture and imagery is her meditation on contemporary life, personal experience and consciousness of nature. Gray has shown her work publicly, group and solo shows since 1996.
