À propos du livre
In his book Navigator, Spencer W. Walker tells his story as a young man guiding a B-24 Liberator on 25 combat missions.
Spencer’s story starts with navigator training and ends with his return home in 1945. This is heady stuff for a young man from New Berlin, a small Pennsylvania town. Spencer left for basic training in 1943 as an 18-year-old Air Cadet. He returned in 1945 as a 1st Lieutenant and combat veteran who was still not able to buy a drink legally.
At the core of the book are the letters he wrote to his parents, letters that his mother saved in two scrap books. He wrote from navigation school in San Marcos, Texas, and March Field, California, and from India where he was stationed with the 10th Air Force. Some of what he wrote is mundane: I went to the dentist, it’s time to eat. Sometimes he was star-struck: I met Spencer Tracey and Abbott and Costello at the Officer’s Club. He wrote in sadness when he learned of friends who had died in the war.
Navigator also includes the narrative he wrote describing his time in the service. The 264-page book features more than 190 photos, including many that he sent home from India.
