Two decades after the Civil War, Philadelphia-born Bess Hirst came back from her Grand Tour of Europe, married Sabe Marshall and became the missus of a horse farm, Morven, in Fauquier County, Virginia. She had an early box camera with which she recorded the next two decades in the life of her growing family. Over a century later, we find ourselves in her photographs.
