À propos du livre
Al Balad is the historical area of Jeddah, the second largest city of Saudi Arabia and can literally be translated as The City. In the 1970s when Jeddah became wealthier due to the oil boom, many Jeddawis moved north, away from Al-Balad, as it reminded them of less prosperous times. African and Asian immigrants moved into the area that has now become established as one of the most thriving and cosmopolitan localities of the Arab world. Most of the photographs in this book were taken during prayer, leaving the streets and allyways quiet and still.
Today Al Balad is a fascinating mixture of modern and ancient, where the glass facades of dramatic skyscrapers rub shoulders with historic buildings, ancient mosques and souks.
