À propos du livre
An architecture of contrast in context
- A building of distinction in a field of monotony rarely loses value.
We never build devoid of context. Rarely does one find themselves being given a blank canvas to make the first move, but rather an intricate tapestry composed of many layers and patterns, stitched together making a cohesive whole. With the imposition of an architecture into this fabric, we are constantly making decisions dictating actions of similarity or difference.
Similarity is achieved by following a set of parameters and rules. These rules function as the form-giver, dictating size and proportions, material choices, and ornamentation. Difference occurs when one breaks or challenges the rules.
The role of the thesis is to choose what rules must be maintained and those that must be broken. This dynamic is manifested at best in the tension created between the two.
