Signs of the Time is a book about the many signs we see while at Topsail Island, N.C., but take for granted. Each one has it's own special meaning and underlying tone. They are all unique in their own special way...revealing a little bit about the personality of their owners.



North Topsail Beach is located at the northern end of Topsail Island on the southeastern coast of N.C. North Topsail Beach is one of three towns located on the 26 mile long barrier island.The other two are Surf City, located about mid-way and Topsail Beach, which is located at the southern end of the island. Together they make up one fantastic destination beach get-away!

I should have named this book Shrimp boats, Seagulls & Sharks Teeth. These are very common items found on Topsail Island, but since I had lots of pictures of signs I went with 'Signs of the Time', instead. Most beach houses have a sign with a catch phrase on it hanging on the front or side of the house. It might have the owners name or the address number but usually, it has a cute, catchy saying. Sometimes it doesn't read anything, at all.

During a recent visit to Topsail I got some shots of a few of these signs. I also happened to be there when Tropical Storm, Gustav came on shore and I have included some of those photos, as well. All of these photos were taken during the week begining on 21 September 2008 and ending on 27 Septemeber 2008.

Topsail Island has changed dramatically just in the few short years that I have been visiting. Beach erosion is a big problem for coastal North Carolina in general but it is especially problematic for Topsail Island since TI is a barrier island. Topsail takes the brunt or surge of any approaching storm long before the mainland feels the effects.

Here you will see some photos of that erosion caused by wind and storm surge.

This book is dedicated to my mom and dad who have passed down their determination and courage to me to face any struggle or tribulation. Through them and with them I have learned to be tenacious and prevailing in my quest through life.
