Leonard Knight's Salvation Mountain is a visionary landscape populated by angels, flowers, impossible trees, a yellow brick road, and text. Scripture and prayers express salvation through repentance and a direct relationship to god, without the interference of any church.



Leonard Knight wanted to keep it simple: God Is Love. He wanted the mountain to be for everyone, and wouldn't let any particular denomination use the mountain as a backdrop for organized religious services.



Salvation Mountain is an inspiring triumph of American Folk Art and gnostic American spirituality. It is currently being restored and maintained by volunteers, as increasing numbers of visitors make the pilgrimage east of the Salton Sea to see it. Leonard always told me he wanted to just get the mountain's message out into the world: God Is Love.
