A Composer's Vision: The Photographs of Ernest Bloch is a survey using 80 images printed by Johnson, from Bloch's archive of over 6,000 negatives made from 1897 into the 1950's. Bloch, in addition to being a major 20th century composer and teacher, was an avid photographer. Johnson was given access to Bloch's work in 1970 by his children. In this volume he presents Bloch's remarkable photography and also recounts in detail Bloch’s relationship to Alfred Stieglitz including the background to the famous 1922 meeting when Bloch saw the series “Music: A Sequence of Ten Cloud Photographs.” Throughout, Bloch shows a sensitive composer's eye, a love for his family, the land and native people and an extraordinary obsession with the self-portrait. Musicians will discover another side of Bloch while those interested in photography will see the eye of a composer. This volume reveals a unique relationship between photography and music.
