Helen's mother Anna Dainis immigrated two years later following a proposal of marriage by mail. The story of Helen's life is one of determination and courage taking her from the coal mining villages of PA to John Hopkins Nursing School and on to Charlotte, North Carolina where she married Dr. Walter B. Mayer. Throughout her life, Helen never lost site of where she came from and continued to keep in touch with relatives and family in Lithuania sending money and clothing at every opportunity.
