The land, the people.



August 2011.

In the summer of 2011 we traveled through Ladakh, situated in northwest India, in the provinces of Jammu and Kashmir.

We visit several Buddhist monasteries, including the Tak Tok Gompa, where on 8 and 9 August the annual festival takes place. Also, we undertook , at an average altitude of 3500 meters, a five-day trek through the rugged mountains around Lamayuru.



With my camera I took the portraits of the people of Ladakh. In the villages around the monastery, or somewhere along the road. A selection of some 60 portraits, I included in this album. I also give a picture of the stunning landscape of Ladakh, the environment in which all persons I portraited live and work.



I see the rugged, barren landscape, with its cold winters and very hot summers, reflected in the weathered faces of the people of Ladakh.
