Historical events are complex and tied to the technical, political, cultural and sociological zeitgeist. At the same time, there is an axiom that good history is at least 25 years old. Now that 25 years have elapsed since the loss of the Challenger Space Shuttle and crew, perhaps we can place this pivotal event of American manned space history into perspective. The release of the photographic images of the Challenger's forward fuselage and crew compartment, seven years after the accident, is considered one of the most successful pro se legal cases in the history of the Freedom of Information Act brought into Federal Court.

Ben Sarao is a documentary photographer. His other major documentary projects include: Eternal Garden of the Villa Borghese; Pompeii-Nevada; and, FRAGMENTS, The Challenger Space Shuttle - A Visual Compendium. Ben first studied documentary photography at the Institute of Design at IIT in Chicago. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his fine art and documentaries including: The NAE-Richard Hunt Award at the Art Institute of Chicago for the photographic exhibit, Gods and Men; an Emmy for the launch of NY 1 News; and recognition by Hasselblad Worldwide Masters in 2008 as being one on the ten best editorial photographers in the world. Ben is also a Senior Member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a long standing member of the AIAA History Committee. For his work as the AIAA History Committee chair, 1996-2000, he received the AIAA Distinguished Service Award. His documentary, The New Frontier Revisited, was exhibited at NASA Headquarters in 2000 and 2002.
