À propos du livre
This book is a visual exploration of the Western Front, the combat zone running from the Channel coast to the Swiss border for most of the First World War (1914-1918). Original photography by Marc Haegeman shows the manifold remains of this conflict, as well as the battlegrounds in Belgium and northern France. More than a century after the facts, trenches, destroyed villages, concrete fortifications, dugouts, underground galleries, mine craters, hospitals, resting areas, and much more, are still found aplenty. These traces may be less immediately visible than commemorative monuments, burial grounds, and peace parks, yet they are equally significant as reminders of the complexity, brutality, and unprecedented scale of human suffering caused by what was once called “the war to end all wars."
