In autumn of 2024, we joined the team that spent several weeks onboard the drilling vessel Chikyu
as outreach officers for IODP Expedition 405, also known as JTRACK.
We embarked during ‘Window 2’ of the expedition, when complicated coring operations
were well underway and preparation was ongoing for the installation of a new long term
borehole observatory through the plate boundary fault zone.
As outreach officers, we had almost unlimited access to the ship, its operational procedures,
and the people involved. We observed and documented everything that we could,
sharing the expedition with the rest of the world through live broadcasts, online videos,
magazine articles, and of course, photography.
This book contains a collection of those images captured during our time on Chikyu.
