In 36 colorful pages, "Chasing Identity" documents twenty years of painter Harriette Tsosie's work. Capturing images from an exhibition of the same name, this small catalog traces Tsosie's evolution as a painter since her 1995 move from Iowa to New Mexico. There, she met and married Carl Tsosie, Jr., moving to his reservation. He built her a studio looking out on the mountains. She began exploring identity, which she sees as shaped primarily be genetics, language and place. As her work progressed, she focused more exclusively on the language aspect of identity, grounded in her academic studies of Latin, Spanish (high school) and French (college). Working in both encaustic (pigmented wax) and acrylic, Tsosie moved towards abstraction, incorporating some text and symbols in her later work.
