At the conclusion of her most recent offering of her online course Form to Freedom, Harriet invited her students to challenge themselves and apply their new skills to create a piece to submit to exhibition, ‘Centred’. Students were encouraged to find an object, ephemera, or textile they cherish and create a woven sculpture that centres around it, or meditate on the notion of centring and express how weaving brings them back to their true centre.

As with each of our exhibitions we were thrilled with the uniqueness and skill displayed by each of the student’s submissions. Breathtaking and distinct sculptural pieces were created within a matter of weeks.

During the 8 week period after the September 2022 release of my online course Form to Freedom, the news cycle was all about climate catastrophe; La Niña causing widespread flooding across Australia and hurricanes making landfall in the USA. As such, I was inspired to call this exhibition Centred; when the world is spinning chaotically around us, what we most often crave is to be grounded in stillness. The slow, meditative nature of weaving can really be a fast track to finding our centre. Even if it is sometimes a little wobbly! Despite the astounding variety in palette, patina, material, scale and technique, the level of experience from beginner, emerging to career artists within these pages, we can easily sense the delight ALL have found in foraging natural organic and salvaged materials (bus tickets! tyre rubber! painting rags!), transposing ancient weaving techniques into the contemporary context and imbuing very personal meaning. I really implore you to read the accompanying texts and be surprised by their ingenuity, depth and passion.
