À propos du livre
My intent with It Looks Better (with a twist) was to play with tropes and the gender roles of common characters like the damsel in distress, and the male hero and villain. In this photo book the main hero and villain are females, whereas the side characters—the damsel in distress and the henchman—are males. The female characters hold their own against their male counterparts, while simultaneously challenging one another. The damsel in distress character challenges traditional portrayal by taking a hit, escaping from his bounds, and even fighting against the female antagonist. I also explore the female hero’s actions through her marriage proposal to the male character and her ability to fight in a stereotypically feminine outfit in order to save her love interest—even if it means killing another person. In my original ending the damsel in distress was the survivor but, by being a male, it fortifies that the male character will always be the hero. In the ending I chose, I played with the fact that even though the female hero does everything she possibly can the outcome will not turn out the way she wanted it to. This goes against the common ‘happy’ ending in which the hero saves the day, defeats the antagonist, and saves the damsel in distress.
